it's still the best metroidvania to come out since HK, which.... might say something about the genre (edited)
I refuse. I think Nine Sols is a much better game. Though maybe not specifically a better metroidvania because it has weaker exploration, but the combat is much more fun.

I just found myself getting annoyed a few too many times playing Silksong. I kept going back to it and finished it quite quickly (never found it that difficult) but still, just a few too many poor design decisions regarding mechanics and room layouts.

I can see the seams of Silksong really clearly too, I'm sure there was a different direction they were going before this became HK 1.5
Curious on this. How do you think it changed exactly? I was moreso under the impression that Hornet was just going to be added DLC to run around Hollownest and they decided to add an entire new game instead.

I do feel like they originally made a design for Hornet, then realized it wasn't actually very fun, and added the crests in later to allow people to actually enjoy the game.

my complete guess is they were doing multiple characters, and condensed it down to just Hornet in the end But I also feel strongly that the plan they had for the world changed

So I'd bet ~2 years was when they pivoted back to this being the base Hollow Knight formula for the whole game The 3 act structure thing also does not feel good or complete

the version of silksong also feels like a first pass at combining a lot of stuff, and was only lightly playtested
I definitely agree that certain areas don't feel playtested. Not really surprising with such a small team. I can imagine it's very easy to be SO used to a game that you don't know what a new player will do or experience.

Act 1 vs. Act 2 is essentially meaningless. Like yes, you get sorta locked in until you get back to a bellway, but nothing actually changes between acts. Act 3 is where a ton of the zones change, but I'm not sure why the acts exist at all.

there are ~10 "sniff the cumstain and follow the smoke" there are ~20 "kill 0/15 rats and bring me their pelts" there are ~7 delivery/escort quests
Also the quest I couldn't be bothered to do: Go kill about 30 enemies total with specific tools.

the Mushroom storyline from the first game, is they they'll outlast the dying world, they always have, and again in Silksong that's their storyline again

All I saw of the mushrooms was that they are watchers looking for the "end of the age" because they like to watch notable things happening. Not the literal ending of the world or anything like that, but just notable world events.
