LoDs need to be semi manually made or at least set in a process, you may have 1-3 levels of detail before close enough is the full model. Nanite allows "infinite" LoD levels as it progressively changes the scale
taxes games
THE ISSUE is when you do it for EVERYTHING. Every massive poly object, every bucket, everything being nanite is RETARDED, because it requires you to compute all these levels of detailc
taxes games
Its cheap in fortnite because it's a rather low poly game at the end of the day and very "static". They also only use it on terrain and large meshes.

This is the big issue with UE5 in general. Epic makes extremely powerful tools, however their uses are niche, need to be used carefully, or require specific implementation, but no one... actually does it.

Yea the way you put it makes it seem like either devs or their leads tell them they must use all the newest UE5 tools and features.

Devs often either make these manually or have an automated piece of software make them. At the end of the day these LoDs are manually set though.

Nanite says screw manually making these or manually tweaking view distance for them, I'll give you automatically adjusting LoD that scales the actual triangles depending how close you are
taxes games
What Types of Meshes Should Nanite Be Used For? Nanite should generally be enabled wherever possible. Any Static Mesh that has it enabled will typically render faster, and take up less memory and disk space.

I am sure it is a good tool, but if you are using a wrench when you need a hammer because you can't be bothered to reach over to get it your game is going to turn out like shit
taxes games
Its incredibly computationally expensive as its a software side solution to something normally heavily done hardware side. It achieves something impossible with current methods TO BE FAIR
Polar_ games
projecting anger here, but when they do try changing it like 343 did with the Slipspace engine overhaul from Blam. They fuck it up, with rental pajeets, and it becomes shit
