Now for something completely disconnected from an era, say a random game where a character talks like someone from that era. But everything else is disconnected, argubly then it's fine to change the memes or smaller references into something another audience would get

I think it depends on the work a bit too. If it is a work made to specifically represent a culture from an era- you shouldn't localize something to the internet from the western era. If the game is a complete package, anime references and game references that a lot of westerners might not know- why should you make it "anime reference + localized japanese meme" instead if just doing "anime reference + Japanese meme" A lot of niconico stuff from that time is actually well known by weebs. If it is game meant to portray that era, then it's not their job to localize it for another audience- its to portray it in a way that captures that energy
Yeah that's pretty fair for this game in particular. I saw someone else make an argument for some VN, I forget which, where the characters make a lot of 2chan references and the translators changed them to 4chan references so that the same feeling woud come across without having to understand specific 2chan memes.

I think that is fair to do. If you take 2ch speak and 4chan-ify a lot of it, that's mostly fine. The purpose of the text/character isn't those references but what it says about the character and their personality

hmmm So, essentially the localizers took it upon themselves to rewrite the dialogue (keeping the main story) but they actually did it well, so they get a pass?

i lowkey think dragonquest as a kid made me a better reader because a like 9 year old trying to decipher like "Och wuttiz bruv wut sez you? Ye tink we gotz it goin well? Well if ye sez so! AR AR AR"

on a different note for good localization, Trails in the sky FC and SC (the original ones, ihave not played the remakes) had localizations that didn't change story or add funny accents like that, but they did change every treasure chest. if you checked an already opened treasure chest, in JP it would just say "the chest is empty" but in the english, every different chest has a different phrase along the lines of "Was the first time not enough for you?"

I'd say the same thing to that though. That changes the tone of the script. I agree that it's a much more fun thing to have, but the localizers are still writing things that aren't there.

I dont think so, you can play the whole game without seeing asingle one of those
Many of the jokes they added to the chests were real lame, but I'm still impressed because they had to come up with that many throwaway lines for every single chest in each of these games
Dialga games
mostly because after FC/SC they add these and i don't like playing on the hardest difficulty for these kinds of games
