Replying to TinyBomby #tinybomby I do get annoyed at people who see something like this and take it to the extreme of the other side and say nothing should ever be localized. I think localization is important to a degree unless you expect your audience to understand Japanese idioms are such. It's a fine line though for sure.
I think it depends on the work a bit too.
If it is a work made to specifically represent a culture from an era- you shouldn't localize something to the internet from the western era.
If the game is a complete package, anime references and game references that a lot of westerners might not know-
why should you make it "anime reference + localized japanese meme" instead if just doing "anime reference + Japanese meme"
A lot of niconico stuff from that time is actually well known by weebs. If it is game meant to portray that era, then it's not their job to localize it for another audience- its to portray it in a way that captures that energy
