idk, to me it has magic, only because it has people i havent heard in so long. enjoying it more than discovering some new person and watching some other smp. it has that alone going for it and thats enough

You can ignore my TedTalk if you want but no one else gives a shit about this so.. I was watching Guude & Pyro's videos on the Mindcrack rebirth thing and to me, there's really no magic and it feels just like every other SMP just with people I know now. I was thinking I just don't give a shit about Minecraft anymore, but I was rewatching the old ultra hardcore episodes and I still really enjoy that slow style of Minecraft with everyone together. I don't believe it's nostalgia and those old episodes felt more like it was a fanfare and making fun of what you got, whereas now it's working with the mechanics of Minecraft. Like, Rob would add a bunch of stuff on top of Minecraft and story and lore, but now there's in-game shit so people don't need any creativity.
What you describe is the difference between using a game as a storytelling medium, and just doing a recorded playthrough

After watching the Guude video again since mindcrack revival, youtube just reccommended me the monument building episode that Guude says to "watch back" in pikas video

Earliest modern example of the exact same usage was Nuclear Throne, which was early access in 2013; however most modern things are clearly based on Slay the Spire, so I'd say that is the popularizing force. I'd put FTL at the same tier as Rogue Legacy, where the core decisions to build up the run are kind of there but not frequent or pronounced enough.

I feel like FTL popularized the pick a path on this tree diagram (which is different)
Unironically I think it comes from the devolution of rpg games from text to voiced interractions. Making its way into big shit like elder scrolls dialogue options then getting into the "Decisions Matter" genre of rpgs. So think Mass Effect, Tell Tale Games, Ect. I sorta blame Tell Tale more

I think pick 3 kinda comes froma mixxing of that concept with class tree systems as RPGs got dumbed down. As for the rogue likes STS definitely made it popular esc

i know he has some sort of LOM DvZ going but is it at all like it used to be or is it like a shitty paywalled server for his 10 remaining patrons
