You can ignore my TedTalk if you want but no one else gives a shit about this so.. I was watching Guude & Pyro's videos on the Mindcrack rebirth thing and to me, there's really no magic and it feels just like every other SMP just with people I know now. I was thinking I just don't give a shit about Minecraft anymore, but I was rewatching the old ultra hardcore episodes and I still really enjoy that slow style of Minecraft with everyone together. I don't believe it's nostalgia and those old episodes felt more like it was a fanfare and making fun of what you got, whereas now it's working with the mechanics of Minecraft. Like, Rob would add a bunch of stuff on top of Minecraft and story and lore, but now there's in-game shit so people don't need any creativity.
That's interesting, hadn't really thought about it
if pressed, I'd probably chalk some of it up to a lack of shared familiarity, all the fun groups/collabs of the past had this effect of everyone sorta being on the same page. Able to be dropped into any game/modpack, regardless of what it was
But yeah, I do think it's less interesting to rely on a game to make the fun for you, Rob used to say something similar and it's generally just good advice

What you describe is the difference between using a game as a storytelling medium, and just doing a recorded playthrough

Rob started playing this game I had never heard of
we need to create a gamedev concentration camp
for everyone who puts pick-3 in their games
The way this clip is structered, it feels like Rob was payed to showcase this game, but that is not true I assume
this feels like an ad
also, somehow this game is $20 for the starter class ($60 for the full game) and has lootbox microtransactions
and yeah, weirdly not a paid ad
I understand now
This game was funded by Kripp, the Hearthstone Twitch streamer from 5-10 years ago
lol
I was looking at its metrics, and they made no sense
1st time studio, dropping a $60 poorly designed auto-battler
with no pre-launch fanfare or wishlists
and a ~1:2 ratio of reviews:sales
lol
but finding out it's a streamer's pet game, that makes sense now
still, fuck pick-3's
come up with literally any other idea
What game popularized it
That's a garbage question
it was a general question for the class
I think whatever game did, ruined gaming more than stardew did for causing 1 trillion stardew clones
I feel like FTL popularized the pick a path on this tree diagram (which is different)
Yeah, I agree with that (both that it popularized that and that it is different)
Slay the Spire was a big pick-3 game, but idk if it was following an established trend at that point or not
you know, I think we can give it to slay the spire
Pokemon red and blue
everything before it I can think of only used it for shops or at the start of a game
KappaRosss
it's not a bad mechanic in isolation, but when you turn every choice into a pick-3
you deserve to die
Mario RPG had it for level ups
That is the oldest I can think of where it is kind of the pick 3 we are talking about
TF2, each class type has 3 classes in it
oh also I was wrong
it's not $20
it's $45
and then $20 per character
but the lootboxes were changed to be F2P apparently
lol
+2 chars releasing per-year as well
"think of it like buying the devs a lunch once a year, and getting some awesome content for the game you love for free"
lmao
