Day late but I wonder if Robs success back in the day, when we were all younger, has a heavy affect on him. Then again it's not like URealms live wasn't massively popular aswell.

I know he says he looks back on his original pkmnrawb stuff with disdain because it was a dark time for him since it was an outlet for himself post-divorce. That said I feel like in a way Rob was being himself (as much as you can be when entertaining) and it was just fine. The implosion of the weirdo fan base also was probably healthier for him, maybe not financially, but fuck the Monica Rupert shit was so deranged

I find it silly that Rob wants to remove numbers altogether. At the minimum, they should exist to define just how capable an ability is, or to guarantee fairness from a GM on how much each ability does to an enemy

I see Rob must have missed the fact that despite how RP heavy GTA RP is, Cars still do insane damage by ramming, guns still do consistent number based damage, etc.

I mean, you don't actually need any of that to RP, I've done gameplay-less diceless RP before, but at that point, the lack of numbers and perspective and consistency does make it very immaterial alright.

By taking away the numbers and consistency, how do you handle PVP? Outside of letting the DM decides who wins... Roleplay contests between those who roleplay their combat the best? Even a weapon advantage could be theoretically overcome, but its still down to the DM to decide who wins. Perhaps doable among a group of friends, or those who don't take it too seriously, or even among a group of very skilled roleplayers working together who are going at it with, not the intent to win, but to tell an interesting story. Maybe.

Its better to have a framework for an RP than not. Worst case scenario, you just break out of it and ignore it for some cool stunts or some nonsense.

But once again, that's public RP, between people trying to powergame and win.

Alternatively, you could try to let the person do it anyways, and suddenly its more of a judge on who has the best Roleplaying skills, and the ones who do are rewarded way too significantly over other players, creating resentment from other players who aren't as good.

So yeah, making content for "players new to roleplay" is actually incredibly difficult without a framework. They'd get lost, powergame, godmod, or just be uncertain of their capabilities or push beyond some invisible limits that is instead in the DM's brain about something working or not...

I mean, I know its possible that this kind of stuff can exist, but its definitely not new roleplayer friendly

because, indeed, things have to fail, to go wrong, the players have to make their own characters fail, or else they always succeed, unless the DM makes some weird framework to have something succeed or not succeed

and always succeeding is actually not a bad way to go about it for more casual RP stuff

OSR basically has it so that whatever outcome makes the most sense from a player’s actions will occur, and if there’s ever a point where there’s ambiguity you roll a d6

imo a crit should just be a headshot, instead it could be 1 damage on your d12 roll x2

But what if the rat was secretly the rat god, and the blow just phased right through them...

And on the other end you could do a shit ton of damage with a modest to hit roll, but really it’s just shuffling around when your big success occurs

A lot of OSR games are rather rules-lite - like 2/3 or 3/4 are rules-lite, the remaining(Rolemaster, AD&D 1e, etc) can get VERY crunchy, especially with tables - but they both still use dice quite a bit. The difference is that old-school games use dice to resolve mainly the random elements of play. Describing how you search for a trap versus rolling a Search check, for instance. If you're in combat with a pack of orcs, though, you're in an extremely chaotic situation; at this point, it's not so simple to just "explain" it without being biased toward the party or against the party. The way these games limit how much the dice matter without eliminating them and while keeping it fair is by keeping numbers small. e.g. a 14th level fighter having an average of 50HP, +9 to hit from level, +3 max to hit and damage from strength, +3 max to hit and damage from a magic sword that does 1d8 damage, leading a party of similar-level associates to fight a red dragon with a 20 AC, 45HP average, +8 to hit, but can do two claws(1d8 each) and a bite(4d8) or a 90' cone fire breath dealing damage equal to current HP, and spellcasting up to 3rd level. Either the dragon dies quick, or the party dies quick.

Gameplay-less diceless RP is just improv, imo. And isn't the first rule of improv to always say yes? Unless people are trying to write novels instead of do improv/roleplay, there shouldn't be much butthurt.
