You can consider a game to be modular with different modes

all framed in the base mechanics

and yet the mode has provided people to buy the game

The game of smash, is a fighting game, the mode of "story" is another way to meet the means of the main selling point the fighting, the story mode is an addition, it is not the main focus of the game. It's no different than a side mode, because IT IS A SIDE MODE. Compare the button size for example.
