My final grade almost always dropped 10% because I am bad at tests (I got better as uni went though)

but, there is a pragmatic issue of, if you have infinite time to solve something, there is no test

Unless you are asking me to solve the great unsolved problems of mathematics, I can guarantee you if you give me enough time (for a sufficient definition of enough) I can solve it

I've done 4 mc only tests ever

my two first year chem finals, and two lab finals

Most tests are a mix of mc and long answer

usually 20-30% mc, the rest long answer

Like the kid knows how long the class period lasts

surely he would know hes got that much time and the test is designed to be completable in that timeframe

So, tests are ass

they are just not good

but there is a pragmatic reason they exist

you just can't properly test the quantity of students

like even if you have a learning disablility or something there are accomodations

even for the standardized tests

that was the most based

class only had 10 people though

My uncle when he took Intro to Quantum Mechanics said all of his tests were open notes and the class could work together

the professor would give them one problem

most of my quanum courses were open book

it was not collaborative though

usually you only start getting good testing stuff when you are a sub 15 person class

more than 15 and you are kind of forced to use standard methods for pragmatic reasons

Like a few weeks ago my chem. kinetics and thermo class test average was like 50

and the professor was just "ok we will do this again friday, it will be 3 questions similar to the ones on this test and if you get it all right its 30 bonus points"

and we walked through the test

most profs aimed for a 60 average

except my E&M1 prof

he said it was lower than the first

and the first was like 60

who said, and I qoute "the test average was a 56, this is much higher than usual, so I am going to make the next test much harder"

dude, she's the prof at my school who won the nobel prize

class started with like 50 students, like 20 people wrote the final exam, and no one looked happy at the end of it

that course is my second lowest university grade (I got a 62)
