Well, my company did do a lot. I just specifically had nothing to do. It was a really weird situation where my company works with "captive shops" to get work done and my company provides the captive shops with engineers. Half the time, the captive shops were NOT receptive to engineers coming in and telling them what they're doing wrong though, so it's just kinda awkward, especially as an entry-level engineer.
And when you start managing teams, you realize most work you give them is ultimately pointless/purposeless anyway
Even when it's just greenlighting their personal projects and giving them funding, none of it will ultimately serve any purpose or even be used

Example: Customers ask vague questions. It takes us a long time, sometimes nearly an hour, to guess what they want. Some retard (he's not he's just not being wise) says "Here's my AI project to speed up the guessing process." I'm like... why not ask the customer to clarify AND in the proces soft train them to ask better questions in the future?
Nah. The AI project will fix it.

Yep, there's no better way to say it that I know 99% of what we bring forward is going to get shelved or not have a customer, but I have the budget and team so I may as well spend it, which ironically looks better for our metrics
And when we do find someone interested, 99% of the time it's because they have money they don't have anything to spend on, and have no intention of even seeing the project through beyond a year or two
And somehow all this money is from our taxes at the end anyway

I also had something similar to this, except that I was hired as an engineer and they wanted me to have on the floor training, so they wanted me to work like this for months.
I enjoyed working at the navy because my boss always had work for me and I could just keep grinding away at cleaning up tasks. I got annoyed that no one else had that motivation, but my current job doesn't allow me to keep grinding away at new tasks and that is so much more soul-crushing.
