Judge Mehta found that Google doesn’t have a monopoly in the market for general search advertising, noting that competitors like Amazon.com Inc., Walmart Inc. and other retailers have begun to offer advertising related to searches on their own websites. But Google does have a monopoly over search text ads, which appear at the top of a search results page to draw users to websites, he said.
That's the basis of the ruling
it's kind of interesting, basically that because Google has this monopoly, they cannot pay Apple/Samsung billions of dollars to make their search engine the default, because that would be horizontally integrating themselves
I personally do not think that they will do anything radical to Google, it will likely be a large fine and a requirement to be extra conciliatory when it comes to ads
There's a bigger case next month that they'll probably win, but if somehow they don't they would most likely get broken up

that they have a monopoly because they are the only company able to use technology to acomplish providing their core services

also the competition to google in a lot of fields is just outright worse
people will not go to a worse product just to stick it to google

if someone can do something better, they will and they will be successful or they will bring change to established companies
Steam does not need any competition, they are a good company as is
google could use some, but only because it is a shitty company
monopolies are bad when you (actually) have no choice, like electricity, which is when they get regulated

I am tempted to try one of those premium search engines, but I feel like half the reason I like Google is because it's all integrated on every computer I use, in my browser, on my phone, etc.
and idk if anything else can really do that
and for non tech literate people, it does not even need to catch up
it needs to be 10-20% better
to gain any traction
because why would you change ecosystems for equal or only minor improvements
we can't even get play station fans to buy a console that actually has games
