Yeah this is an interesting topic. As any science works, there has to be some amount of testing, but that testing can potentially just ruin a group of people’s lives.

Education is changing constantly and is widely different from district to district, let alone state to state in the US, so anyone ever saying, "education is worng because of XYZ" is always going to be generalizing.

Math changes are the only ones in the US I am vaguely aware of because I followed it a bit during the common core stuff (is that still the standard?) Its wild how they can just change the system every 5 or so years and just ruin entire generations on a whim

Common core was wild because I understand in theory that it was "teaching you to follow a set procedure to do it instead of memorization" but the fact of the matter is, you have to memorize a subset of tools, it is required in math

i also remember in like middle school before i dropped out i would get points on homework and tests deducted because i "didn't show my work" even though i had the right answers, i just did it all in my head so i didnt need to physically do the thing on paper

The reason you're forced to show work in easier levels of math where they aren't as necessary is so you're used to the concept of showing your work and can do it more easily when you get to advanced math that actually need it. At least, that's the concept.

i only learned enough of algebra to pass my GED test then i forgot it afterwards because i literally never use anything more than the basics

I think there's a lot of random math things that are actually useful at points, but most of the time you can just look up _ calculator and do it faster anyways

I think the problem is there is a lot of stuff you can use math for in day to day life that is super useful, but for a moderate increase in wasting time you can circumvent it without having to think as much

I was arguing with a guy who was saying he should not have to show any work for integrals and just submit his assignments with them solved (he also admitted he just uses chat gpt to do his integrals, and does not care if the answer is right or not)

Sorry a bit late, but new math was an update to arithmetic in the 1960s that everyone hated but it's the current method we use today. The change helped us lead into set theory better.
