How much of your degree was worthless by the time you graduated? I've heard people say (depends on the degree but) half life is about 2 years.
surprisingly for a career which only sometimes requires a degree and cares much more about certifications, connection, etc. and going to a shity university, my degree still super valuable. im also in a computer science related field, cybersecurity. will say the networking and resume building you do in college is just as valuable. i am under certified compared to my peers but leveraged my grass touching experiences (sports, clubs, confrence speeaking, volunteering, etc) and degree to still get the job

knowing multiple language is one of the most undersold things in america. once you start looking at big international companies everyone wants you speaking at least two. bummed i did not put more effort in learning languages in middle and highschool when thats much easier

for sure, will say with classes that were in my program, we barely scratched the surface on so many topics compared to what i meed to know in the field. everything else was junk, especially the business major requirements (my program was in the college of business

love an english or math class, but ot was just rehashing highschool level stuff. maybe not a waste of time, but unnecessary. stuff like business organization and stuff was useless and a wast of time. i feel like thats all to be expected with college

everything requiring a degree is a symptom of needing to restrict candidates in tbe current job market, it just an easy way of contributing to that

For me, a degree is teaching you how to learn and having a course on the intricacies of gitlab or docker would be pointless to me because you're missing the fundamentals and just becoming a mindless drone to execute work. And then a master's or phd teaches you autonomy on how to teach yourself how to learn

its totally arbitrary becuase some careers hate foreign degrees, some love them. some will use that to filter people for countries which will be more fine being paid less

So I did an apprenticeship in IT instead of going to uni, and its been immensely valuable to have those 4 years of on the job experience instead of gone to uni. Since then I've been able to progress as well, now I'm much more devops/dev rather than sys admin

that was my original plan. practicaly dropped out of high-school by senior year. only took one class, ap compsci. spent most of my time doing a small internship and trade school for IT/sysadmin. hell went to uni as a IT/sysadmin major at first. (an even more useless degree as you like never need a degree in IT) had planned to take A+ and Net+ instead of uni

+1 for A+, I also did that during my apprenticeship. Did that route work out for you in the end?

well i did the testout pc pro course twice which is an a+ curriculum. also did the net pro course which alligns with net+. got those certs but never did take the comptia exams to get the actual certs

my school got rid of the sysadmin program and migrated everyone in it to the data analytics program. i did not want to do data analytics so switched to cybersecurity becuase my councilor said it was the best and most similar program the school offered

nearly everything i am doing now is self taught over the last few months

And agree with everything Mint said, computing is a weird field because if you're not trying to be an actual chip architect, every other degree/program/certification/internship leads to sorta the same nebulous job

I will say, as someone who has worked jobs where I'm told to "watch paint dry" and get paid for it It is usually torturous
I sorta had this issue where I was not being given any work to do, but then my boss would complain that I never do any work and I was just stunned at what I was meant to say to that.

My boss asked me to participate in a project where we'd collect common customer requests. I said I don't spend enough time in the ticket queue to know what common requests are. He was confused by that, then started saying something about that needing to be corrected, then asked what I do all day then.

Also provided HR a bunch of examples of the guy simply not being present. New on-call system. Don't know how to use it. No one else does either. Wouldn't give info. Got a guy bothering me at bum o'clock in the morning asking me to do his job for him, brought it to my manager three times. Not even a "I'll talk to management." Got a promotion. Waited 100+ days to be excused from my old role and enter my new one. Repeatedly brought it up. HR had to intervene and I transitioned the next week.

Leg and Pika will laugh for me saying this But the most useful thing anyone can do at companies like that is to fuck around with AI all day You either accidentally will solve major problems or at the very least you get a marketable skill you can get a raise for at your next job

Well, my company did do a lot. I just specifically had nothing to do. It was a really weird situation where my company works with "captive shops" to get work done and my company provides the captive shops with engineers. Half the time, the captive shops were NOT receptive to engineers coming in and telling them what they're doing wrong though, so it's just kinda awkward, especially as an entry-level engineer.

And when you start managing teams, you realize most work you give them is ultimately pointless/purposeless anyway Even when it's just greenlighting their personal projects and giving them funding, none of it will ultimately serve any purpose or even be used
