Peepul say computer and electrical engineering is like 3-5 years on the low end, while civil and mechanical engineering are like 15-30 years on the high end. Faster changing industries so you spend more time in continuing ed.

You should always be learning on an engineering job. The degree helps you know the fundamentals so you know where to continue learning.

I don't think that's what I mean. If you need to replace an aging server farm you will have endless arguments about the principles to apply to the decision, because twice a decade new paradigms repudiate the old. Separate storage and compute or HCI, on-prem or cloud, KVM or k8s? With something like civil engineering your parking lot replacement isn't a "throw everything you used to know away" situation. Advancements in technology improve the existing science, they don't dogmatically replace it.

Half life doesn't mean you only learn once every n/2 years. It's the speed at which the value of your knowledge creeps closer to 0.

surprisingly for a career which only sometimes requires a degree and cares much more about certifications, connection, etc. and going to a shity university, my degree still super valuable. im also in a computer science related field, cybersecurity. will say the networking and resume building you do in college is just as valuable. i am under certified compared to my peers but leveraged my grass touching experiences (sports, clubs, confrence speeaking, volunteering, etc) and degree to still get the job

knowing multiple language is one of the most undersold things in america. once you start looking at big international companies everyone wants you speaking at least two. bummed i did not put more effort in learning languages in middle and highschool when thats much easier

for sure, will say with classes that were in my program, we barely scratched the surface on so many topics compared to what i meed to know in the field. everything else was junk, especially the business major requirements (my program was in the college of business

love an english or math class, but ot was just rehashing highschool level stuff. maybe not a waste of time, but unnecessary. stuff like business organization and stuff was useless and a wast of time. i feel like thats all to be expected with college

everything requiring a degree is a symptom of needing to restrict candidates in tbe current job market, it just an easy way of contributing to that

For me, a degree is teaching you how to learn and having a course on the intricacies of gitlab or docker would be pointless to me because you're missing the fundamentals and just becoming a mindless drone to execute work. And then a master's or phd teaches you autonomy on how to teach yourself how to learn

its totally arbitrary becuase some careers hate foreign degrees, some love them. some will use that to filter people for countries which will be more fine being paid less
