I feel like FTL popularized the pick a path on this tree diagram (which is different)
Unironically I think it comes from the devolution of rpg games from text to voiced interractions. Making its way into big shit like elder scrolls dialogue options then getting into the "Decisions Matter" genre of rpgs. So think Mass Effect, Tell Tale Games, Ect. I sorta blame Tell Tale more
