A lot of OSR games are rather rules-lite - like 2/3 or 3/4 are rules-lite, the remaining(Rolemaster, AD&D 1e, etc) can get VERY crunchy, especially with tables - but they both still use dice quite a bit. The difference is that old-school games use dice to resolve mainly the random elements of play. Describing how you search for a trap versus rolling a Search check, for instance. If you're in combat with a pack of orcs, though, you're in an extremely chaotic situation; at this point, it's not so simple to just "explain" it without being biased toward the party or against the party. The way these games limit how much the dice matter without eliminating them and while keeping it fair is by keeping numbers small. e.g. a 14th level fighter having an average of 50HP, +9 to hit from level, +3 max to hit and damage from strength, +3 max to hit and damage from a magic sword that does 1d8 damage, leading a party of similar-level associates to fight a red dragon with a 20 AC, 45HP average, +8 to hit, but can do two claws(1d8 each) and a bite(4d8) or a 90' cone fire breath dealing damage equal to current HP, and spellcasting up to 3rd level. Either the dragon dies quick, or the party dies quick.

Gameplay-less diceless RP is just improv, imo. And isn't the first rule of improv to always say yes? Unless people are trying to write novels instead of do improv/roleplay, there shouldn't be much butthurt.
