There is a genuine cultural shift occuring because it hit the point where the average "well meaning" person is fed up, stances on immigration are basically flipped from being very pro as a country to against

Spooky does not believe me because I guess his circle of Canadians are super pro joining the US
I feel like I explain this over and over again it's not "oh boy we can't wait to be victimized by daddy US as a 51st state" the MAJORITY of normal non-boomer Canadians want to proceed with a system that advances shared cross-border intermingling and get to a point where they can have broader access to everything in the US

I think immigration is easier to fix if we just make it prohibitively hard for the people who came on loopholes to work during their stay (they originally were, this was relaxed because the government is greedy and companies wanted cheap labour)

  • Cons did not come out hard about the 51st state thing and people view them as weak when dealing with trump
  • Libs got rid of Trudeau
I love watching J.J.McCollough (semi popular conservative canadian journalist) malding whenever Carney says something anti Trump/anti America and being like “no that’s not good don’t say that 😠” conservatives are dropping the ball on this free pass to win easy votes

They don't even have to say "we hate Trump". Literally just come out and say "the 51st state comments are unacceptable, and we will fight for the best interest of Canadians" or a similar platitude without specifically stating how

Like my parents are both SUPER moderates, I’ve gotten my dad to agree that some things trump has done are good, but the 51st state rhetoric has him pissed off because it genuinely scares my mom for some reason

I think that is the main takeaway, that being treated like shit for no particular reason makes a country rally around not liking the country treating them like shit (edited)

It does not piss me off in the sense that "I am actively mad", but I am naturally a very petty person so it does make me support whatever petty action the Canadian government can do
