Steam does not need any competition, they are a good company as is

google could use some, but only because it is a shitty company

I think the only way google would be ousted in any of their services is if the government genuinely just nuked them

Google has all the bells and whistles, and is made as convenient as possible

It would take so long for any other thing to catch up in a meaningful way

And the only way they could would be to create a similar monopoly

and for non tech literate people, it does not even need to catch up

it needs to be 10-20% better

to gain any traction

that's the issue I think, any field where you can only pick *one* thing of a set of options

you just pick the best

and then all the 2nd/3rd/4th best options get mad that nobody picks them

and then the switching cost is so high, that there's very little incentive to switch

The AI stuff annoys me because its in the way of what I want to actually use the service for

they can have whatever they want but if it is at the top of my search or whatever, I get annoyed

the AI feels like a different feature to me

the search itself has become really bad for both

copilot/gpt/gemini/grok/whatever are good for task-based queries

less so for general search/questions

I will not use a search engine that uses an algorithm to guess what is most relevant to me

sort by a single standard relevancy metric

The AI search shit I feel will be a trend for a while

And then it will die

And then they'll fine tune it

And put it back in

Even though it's barely better

Machine learning is genuinely one of the most powerful tools humanity has created in a while, I just think a lot of the trend ways it is being used will become less relevant

it is huge in control theory for doing control that would otherwise be way too intensive to do in a reasonable amount of time

machine learning is just stochastic non-convex optimization applied to interesting datasets

It would be fun to blacklist the top result every search

being able to select priority sites would be neat

just to see how many searches until your results become complete skitzo deranged
