the only sorta answer I've come up with, is a hard deflection of "I'm not going to comment on an active judicial case"
but I don't think that works really
Any countries that jail/kill/disqualify politicians during a campaign are insane
it has, NEVER worked
I mean, I guess with Lincoln, he won in the end

(that's a big part of why there was a civil war specifically in 1860)
I also feel like it's not completely true
because, there were dixie politicians elected to office
during reconstruction
they weren't blackballed by society
most sought redemption, and got it

none of them became US president, and no one in the CSA government leadership sought nationwide office in the post 1866 USA
but yeah, that's the one lesson of the Civil war it bothers me we don't teach more
that after it was over, the general consensus was to forgive your brothers
people worked for it, but there wasn't this idea of "traitors to the union"
that's a modern revisionism
