for the most part 4e and 5e aren't like 3.5/pathfinder where you need to limit available source books
partly because there are so fucking many official 3.5/pathfinder books
Replying to Madjick #harrybutimnot Like Ranger would be badass in a death of magic setting with a lot of woodland travel and requirements for food and water.
Sorry, there's a lot of chat going on that I'm trying to process all at once. I meant that, at level 1, yeah, monk sucks, but if you're starting at a higher level in a campaign(I don't know about you, but I find it very difficult to run a single campaign all the way from level 1 to 20), monk can be very good.
Replying to Gent #gent_. Druid is a better nature boy, fighter is a better combat boy, rogue is a better stealth boy
Facts. That's why I had to specify no magic and I had to put them in their environment. The class blows but in the right campaign they'd be great. A fighter would be useless in strixhaven for example
isn't monk like... good levels 5-10
Just be 4e and everyone is both martial but mostly magical

If they had used 4e design for a D&D MMO, rather than what they use for Stormreach, that actually might be a pretty decent game. If you sped up the combat a bit, it might even be fun as a board game. But it doesn't feel like D&D.
yeah 4e is a wargame, not dnd
or at least in that direction
Replying to Kampfgruppe Kofewalt #zingly yeah 4e is a wargame, not dnd
More like a board game that moves a bit slow than a war game, but pretty much
Replying to Gent #gent_. Fighters be like “yeah, I’m gonna walk 40 miles in heavy plate armor with a long sword and 20 arrows”
A 1st level fighter wearing plate mail, carrying a longsword, bow, and quiver of arrows is going to have at least 15 strength to wear the plate mail, probably has good constitution and at least half-decent dexterity. A 1st level fighter is also SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than a normal human. a 10-11 in 3.x/4e/5e in an ability score gives a +0 modifier, but that's not the average for a normal person.
Replying to Gent #gent_. Rogues be like “I’m going to rob people even though everyone knows what a rogue is and looks like”
Do you only play with people that play complete stereotypes for classes? When I play a rogue, if I'm somewhere safe, I'm wearing normal clothes, or if I'm paranoid, I'll be wearing leather armor with baggy clothing over it. I'm not going to be trying to actively sneak around in a church full of people.
I know this isn't Rob chat, but for all the shitty or stupid stuff Rob has made, he got it pretty right with the bandit thing. Eluamous hides in the bushes, while Schmoopy just tosses his gear in the bushes and puts on the beggar rags, and the bandits just walk past him, cuz he looks like he doesn't got shit on him.
Replying to sudo TPK #sylfar Just because you're a rogue doesn't mean you have to walk around in leather armor all day, twirling daggers, slipping in and out of the shadows throughout town.
very true
people tend to get stuck in fantasy stereotypes, especially movie or tv shit
But isn't the whole point of a roleplaying game to, yknow, roleplay? Like, if you have to trek 40 miles, why would you walk from point A to point B, wearing your full plate armor, sword and board equipped, when you could wear normal clothes, get a couple horses and a cart, and ride there?
there really should be an incentive to be slightly more grounded and have traveling armor and main combat armor
We would always travel as poor pesants with a cart with all the gear in it when we played
with only a sword or two between us, maybe a bow?
the rest all hidden
which is why we would have the monk of the party drive the cart
so he could stop, jump into the back and throw gear at people first chance
Replying to Kampfgruppe Kofewalt #zingly there really should be an incentive to be slightly more grounded and have traveling armor and main combat armor
like leather under bigger robes works to cover that kinda stuff
gnome druids would be fun
with an animal companion he could ride through the woods 😉
