no render distance doesnt matter

the server loads the max allowed distance for you

no matter your own distance

Max distance is 2

so if the server is set to 16

theres also simulation distance now

and you set yours to 2

mobs 16 chunks away

can still hit you

and find you

Okay set max distance to 100

Get everyone on

And we fly in a perfect pattern

i think max for vanilla is 32

on java

bedrocks is higher
