this is sorta political
but it belongs here
Vote for the matrix
I'd low-key vote for this
fuck it
it's just so obviously evil
I disagree on that last part
the sales pitch is fantasy, sure
but the idea that "let's blast the brain's terror receptors using a spooky helmet and implant"
that I think is feasible in the medium term
I think the opposite version of this will exist too, a "dopamine brain implant thing"
what's the cast like this time Dane?
AI startup that will get 1 mil in investments and have nothing to show for it, a tale as old as time
Replying to Dialga #god_of_time so, brainwashing?
the pitch is brainwashing, but I feel like the feasible concept is "will you let us subject you to mental torture for X days, in exchange for not serving 10 years in prison"
if they made the offer for physical torture, old school brutal torture
I think some people would take them up on it
Dane, I'm 100% on-board with brain fuckery, I expect to get a neuralink at some pointin my life
This is the kind of thing that would not be allowed even if they do figure it out
without prison reform, I agree Pika
which part?
like, obviously I'm not going to consider being lobotomized in exchange for a lighter prison sentence
but mental/physical torture, yeah I'd consider it
depending on my understanding of what it would entail
I would consider other physical augmentations long before a chip in my brain
my brain is who I am, I am not risking that
it would have to be less than a 0.001% risk to even be worth it
yould you expand you brain Pika, if the option was available?
define expand?
like, a N64 expansion module style
they just add extra brain matter
I fundementally view changing how your brain works as killing yourself
I think we've had this convo in voice at some point
but I no longer agree with that premise, I used to
but I now think there is a layer beyond the physical vessel of the brain, and if you pour the 'you' of your brain into a different vessel, (such as by adding extra synapses to your brain" that is still you
Okay, let me clarify. If you can do it in a way where the way you think does not change at all
like, obviously, a lobotomy, brain tumor, etc, removes brain matter
but I don't think it's identity death, I think it a s direct imparment of the 'you'
I do not view that as killing yourself
so, for instance, a perfect digital copy of your brain on a computer is still you
and that if you could fix it by plastering new neurons in, you'd return to being you or a you-equivalent
if any change to your brain is identity death though, I think that's a similar argument to people who say you die every night
I think its hard to define Spooky. I think if you lost brain nurons and became brain damaged, 'you' would be dead. I think if you could replace them, the new brain damaged 'you' would then die and a new, 3rd different 'you' would exist
no Dane, because I think if you want to define a soul, you need to be able to uniquely identify what makes someone 'you'
sequence it like DNA
Spooky, I think fundementally on an instance to instance basis 'you' expeience identity death and are replaced by an almost exact but slightly different 'you', so I think my view on the matter is different from most
until you can sequence a soul, I don't think that's what resides in your brain
the me from a week ago is dead and gone
even if I do think the concept is an interesting interpretation
see Pika, I don't disagree or dismiss that notion, the 'you' who you are dies every second in that case
but that's why I think you have to define 'you' as more than that
Replying to Rusp #rusp. Your brain isn't everything
I would literally sacrifice any part of my body before my brain though, so I think thats the difference
that is true though
literally every aspect of your body does change how your mind works
Replying to Rusp #rusp. Even disregarding soul, the hormonal/chemical environment in your body heavily changes your thoughts and emotions
This is the reason I believe people who take drugs are insane
So Pika, if you accept that the instantaneous 'you' is constantly dying, what is the value in protecting your brain, versus shaping it into how you think best serves future 'you'
