Wondering if anyone can give insight on what's up here. I installed Retroarch through Steam as a frontend for emulators. However, the "Online Updater" button you can use to download emulators isn't in the Steam version, only the version you download from the website; on the Steam version, you have to use the emulators the Retroarch devs provide through Steam. Their statement when someone asked about the lack of the "Online Updater" button:
"The cores are distributed as DLC, in order to stay within Steam's infrastructure (which was required for us to be on the store). All of the cores provided were given approval by the authors of the core code (with more on the way).
Right click RetroArch in your library, go to properties, go to the DLC tab and check all the boxes you wish to download. If RetroArch was open, restart it.
The rest of the assets, aside from thumbnails, (currently not provided) are automatically included within the main RetroArch install."
Luckily, it's as simple as downloading & installing the standalone version of Retroarch and copy-pasting all the files to the Steam version's folder to get all the functionality out of it, but does anyone know what exactly the dev means that it has to stay within Steam's infrastructure? I'm just curious, don't know what exactly they mean.
You install the emulators through steam, so it handles the downloads, as opposed to downloading retroarch through stream, then they handle installing the emulators on their end
having the emulators be dlc makes it so at no point is any part of instillation not through steam
Retroarch just takes all available emulators and compiles a way to house them all through the same program. I think the reason that there are fewer on steam is as they said. To absolutely avoid any possible issues, they asked the emulator devs for permission to use them. I think the base retroarch does not really have permission to use them per se
on steam, if an emulator dev was mad they had it up, they could probably complain to steam, so they are probably playing it super safe
That is purely my conjecture though
a lot of emulators are open source projects
So there is nothing legally wrong with using them in the way retroarch uses them
but steam may disagree
and play it safe and just remove it if complained to
