ok, I spent longer figuring this out than I probably should have
excluding refunds, I have paid AAA prices ($60+) for PC games 25 times in my life
On steam I have never bought a game at full AAA price
I need to add in Switch games to my count
I made a list of all games I paid more than $30 for (to include launch discounts or w/e) and excludes games which launched for $29.99 which imo is a tier down
looking through my list of refunds was my favorite part
remember Biomutant, remember Code Vein, remember Tales of Arise, etc.

other than Fate/Samurai Remnant being the most expensive non-deluxe ed. game I bought
my other funny observation was that I paid more for Divinity Original Sin 1 than I did for DOS2
Before I refunded it I spent like 25 CAD on DOS2
I pirate more games than I buy, but I was surprised how short my list was tbh

This is me with most series. I get into the series with a good game, play the other games and realize the newer ones aren't as good, then don't bother with future titles and go back to playing the ones I enjoyed the most.

I can't agree with Persona getting better with each game because imo the Persona 2 games are way better than Persona 3
If you were around when Persona 3 came out then you definitely had the opportunity to experience Persona 2 (Innocent Sin, at least)
It got remade for the PSP. Persona 1 too
Most of my favourite games have random encounters, not that I particularly like that part though.
I am not a huge fan of the alternative of map encounters because then I just feel like I'm wasting time kiting them

You probably haven't played the original Romancing SaGa but the overworld encounters are so abundant if you don't kite them on certain screens you can end up in very long gauntlets. What's worse is that the enemies scale to your level but not exactly, so you will typically end up in a couple of fights that are particularly strong and the enemies can two-shot your characters.
