there is an aspect of, people who haven't had a good 4X since Civ 5
who want to believe
I think the MP numbers will be telling
This feels like a game that's going to get shilled hard for a couple weeks, then be forgotten about
I think they got spooked by the sales drop-off of 6, and that every other 4X game has 'failed' in the last 8? years
and read into that as "the old fanbase for Civ and 4x is gone, we need new blood"
from the reveal, I remember being more annoyed at it being a British VA
I think British-female voices are annoying at a base level
There's probably a female VA that wouldn't suck, but she's definitely not it
I also think, Civ in general has gone downhill with their selection of quotes
and has less of the cool thematic drapings that made 4 & 5 so iconic
Replying to Spooky Phijkchu #spooky.131 from the reveal, I remember being more annoyed at it being a British VA
its unironically my biggest issue with BG3
Darkest Dungeon (@DarkestDungeon) on X
"Go with grace into the great beyond..." We at Red Hook are heartbroken to confirm the passing of our beloved voice actor, Wayne June.
twitter.comI think they lack the ability to have a neutral intonation, which makes every line have this tone that's just not meant to be there
I still struggle with whether I like fully-voiced games
yes
the Bioware style, people standing expositing at each other in a cutscene
I'm done with
I think the issue is also, game writing sucks
the bioware wheel is kinda dying
but the style of, characters stand looking at each other, and the camera swaps back and forth is everywhere
even (mostly) well-written games like Witcher use it
that whole situation is still weird
I feel like there are two strategies right now:
1) Bioware dialogue delivery
2) Disembodied voice in your head/earpiece
most games have ditched companion NPCs who talk to you in-gameplay
other than tLoU and GoW
Max, I actually think you're onto something with your original point about good narrators
I think it would be a welcome change of pace
I'm going through all the games I can think of that were narrative-focused
and weirdly, I think Metro was the only one that I think had an effective use of dialogue
for the narrative
even if it's not a true narrator, I also like games where your characters inner monologue is voiced
