This is really autistic and long (222 pages) but is a harbinger of the impending game industry crash

PRESENTATION: The State of Video Gaming in 2025 — MatthewBall.co
A 220-page presentation on the past, present and potential future of the video game industry.
www.matthewball.cothis is a presentation for investors, as to why the game industry is fucked long-term
the tldr is literally: everything is fucked, the industry is a balloon with no possible future growth that can save it
it's nothing anyone here doesn't know
but this will be a major weight for computer trading to devalue gaming stocks and will likely ward off institutional VC funding
I'll spare people posting a bunch of graphs, but there are some interesting ones in here
mostly related to Nintendo and China
again, not anything people here didn't probably already know, but interesting visuals
this slide in particular though
I think is funny enough to post
Replying to legorhin #jazardly why is this covering chinese film, nollywood and bollywood?
to illustrate that as China comes online with their own major game studios, the % revenue from Chinese gamers consuming overseas IPs will likely fall
Because it's a small, non-public studio
and Elden Ring was their first mass-market game
Elden Ring at #2 in 2022 was the first time they had a top-12 selling game
yeah, though that was mostly pre-launch
I feel like that marketing point has kind of died off over time

I knew Hogwarts Legacy did well but I didn't expect it to be number 1
Replying to polu #polutropos I knew Hogwarts Legacy did well but I didn't expect it to be number 1
I also thought Diablo IV would be higher (#2 or #3)
I'll have to look through this later, seems interesting
it's LONG, but I actually liked reading through it
some of the doom and gloom surrounding mobile, I didn't realize how bad that was personally
Replying to legorhin #jazardly the final section of the talk is just how expensive GTA6 will be
Literally all talk from gaming people for AAA studios is how they want it to be 100 so they can increase prices of other games
so that makes sense
There are entire companies banking on GTA 6 saving them by letting them upcharge an additional 30-40 dollars
games already kind of are $100 on-release
between the deluxe editions and advanced access weeks
GTA being $100 for the base edition (which I think will happen) will imo backfire for the rest of the industry
I think a collapse and restructuring of gaming is genuinely needed
Indies will be fine, Nintendo will survive
a lot of AAA bloat needs to go
I think the top 15 games/year are fine
it's that 16-100 region that's fucked
all the middling AAA and AA games
and bloated "indies"
that are spending single-digit millions
7 Remake was what I thought you were going to mention
where it's ABSURDLY over-budget
and there are 3 of them
should have been 1 game max
Chinese region support is kind of wonky
and when there are periods where it's bad, they swap back to English
the peak online graph on the next page is imo more indicative of China being larger
I like that a potential growth saviour is just making a new genre of games
