The hate for it feels very similar to the Harry Potter stuff
where the devs were dismissive about the role of women in jttw, and then doubled down when pressed by Western journalists
it's got nothing to do with the game, just that the devs/IP owners are "the bad guys"
and like Max said earlier, the devs were offered "help" from a DEI consulting group to help them recognize their bias and fix their game
