I am not a NMS player, so I'm probably getting the exact timeline wrong
but NMS:NEXT was released 2 years after release, and was a full rebuilt version of the game
that was update 1.5
the updates prior to that were post-launch updates, smaller in scope
they then built on NMS:Next for all future updates
I'm not trying to get into the semantics of this, it doesn't really matter
it's a HUGE success to turn a game around like that
my challenge to that was, I'm uncertain had they had an extra couple years to work on the game (if that was even feasible) whether the game would have been voluntarrily rebuilt internally
I just think Dev hell is a thing that games run into, and without a good game director who has shipped successful games before
these studios seem to spin their wheels for years, before releasing something that's in a worse state than earlier builds were, because too many different people tried to "fix" it
or too many different half-baked visions for the game are never downselected from

if everyone who worked on the game was more skilled , it would be done sooner, for cheaper, and be better
