For another book, I read this a while ago. But Endurance was an absolutely amazing read: https://a.co/d/33xFgcp and my end goal in model kits is to build that ship
Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Basic Books
In August 1914, polar explorer Ernest Shackleton boarded the and set sail for Antarctica, where he planned to cross the last uncharted continent on foot. In January 1915, after battling its way through a thousand miles of pack ice and only a day's sail short of its destination, the became...
a.coI always like to recommend that book.
I even got an Endurance patch, hold on
Replying to Kribbles #kribbles1 And right now I'm reading the short stories by Algernon Blackwood like The Willows and The Wendigo. I think those are the most popular short stories.
Algernon wrote a journal about him canoeing the Danube, which directly inspired The Willows. I think this was a fascinating read. It felt like a blog post but from 1900: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/MacMillan%27s_Magazine/Down_the_Danube_in_a_Canadian_Canoe

Kribbles, this is not really a military history book, which I tend to not recommend (even though it's a lot of what I read)

My Reminiscences of East Africa
The legendary German general of the bush war in Africa For many the Great War means the Western Front, that gruelling, slogging stalemate of attrition that was the mud and blood of trench warfare. Yet this was truly a 'world war' fought between nations, many of whom were imperial powers with footholds, interests or col

Did you read Lawrence of Arabia's journal? I really loved the movie, tried to read the book and woof it was a tough one.
(I didn't finish it)
Lawrence of Arabia's writing is impenetrable
it's this weird dilemma, because his writing and translations are historically super notable and awesome
but they are impossible to get through
It felt like a historical textbook
As in, like, a book that historians love
A lot of the British explorers (by virtue of learning a fuckton of languages) did a ton of work translating local stories and texts
and despite that, most of them are criminally underutilized for whatever reason

priffin vs snoopy...
Currently reading “There is no Antimemetics Division”, an SCP story that was turned into an independent book. It’s quite interesting so far. If you haven’t heard of SCP before I’d recommend that too, it’s a nice mix of silliness, sci fi and horror
All I know about SCP is it got overrun by weirdo's who use it for their gender euphoria or weird fetish shit

That's funny, I heard about this from somewhere else recently and read all of the SCP stories. Didn't know it was an independant book. It was a very good read though.

I feel it was a lot better in the in between period of not just guys from 4chan, but not whatever it is they are today
This book kind of comes from that in between era

I feel like I vaguely remembered hearing about it before too but I saw it in barnes and noble yesterday and picked it up because I remembered it was based on scp
the SCP lore/world is honestly pretty great, but since it was always collaborative, as it became more and more popular it became impossible to gatekeep
Yeah, I still think some of the newer stuff is good too I just think changing old articles because the author ended up being like, transphobic or something is a little needless for something like that
Although there were also some deleted because they were pedophiles and I think that’s probably a good idea so, lol
Replying to Wuvwand #loveland Although there were also some deleted because they were pedophiles and I think that’s probably a good idea so, lol
ehhh unless the content itself is pedophiliac in nature, I still disagree with removing it
Do people really read something and say, "Well, this was created by someone bad, therefore, I can't like it!"
Wait don't answer that...
Considering scp is specifically marked as creative commons or whatever and you can’t make money off it unless you change names and things like antimemetics did, yeah there’s not much need to care if scp gets “canceled” anyway
I just appreciate people writing fantasy/fiction that has unique elements that don't just pull from Tolkien or Lovecraft
Its truly unique stuff yeah
I like how many of them feel grounded in reality
Obviously stuff like a rubber ball that continuously gains kinetic energy isn’t possible but like, that’s the whole point

Marble Hornets was a great showcase of the Slenderman SCP!
They made a slenderman SCP? Neat!
I thought Slenderman was originally from an SCP?
I thought it was just an independent 4chan thing
You're probably right, I'd believe it
