the whole engaging part of the genre to me, is having a character exposed to a world they are unaccustomed to

sure, that is a big part of it, but I would classify things that do not satisfy that as an isekai

and then the complexities of that world often directly correlate to how interesting the isekai is

I think it's an incomplete definition

I could definitely workshop the wording a bit

but that to me is the core feeling of an isekai

because I don't think a genre can exist based on plot elements, it needs to FEEL like that genre
