Wait. Frieren is a battle shounen? I dropped this after 4 episodes, after everyone was making the show out to be super deep and fancy. So like Yu Yu Hakushou without me dropping it. If I knew Frieren was a battle shounen I wouldn't have dropped it.
It has a mage exam arc that is fight heavy
It being a battle shonen is a meme though, it is not a battle shonen

Strangest cliffhanger I ever saw was Lies Weeping, the most recent Black Company book. It just ends in the middle of an action sequence. And it doesn't have the excuse of being an anime adaptation of another work that has the excuse of the publisher saying "YOU WILL ADAPT THIS MANY EPISODES FOR THIS PARTICULAR BOOK".
Glen Cook was just really into light novels at the time and wanted to be experimental, and copy their arbitrary end points.
