But since the Republicans had one unified platform, (unlike whigs/Dems)
slavery was to be mantained
and even among their party, it was a minority opinion
what was fairly certain, was halting the expansion of slavery
outlawing the atlantic slave trade (which the South supported)
oh, and ending the right of return for escaped slaves
