Depends which type. One is appeasement and balance, the other is try to optimize and take from different ideologies based on what is the most reasonable

I can't really give you the answer i want to give you because I dont know how to put it into words

If I had to try to narrow a defining reason someone would be a centrist as opposed to on either side that is the best I can think of off the top of my head

I think it'd be fair to say, "centrism" or "independent" is the lack of an encompassing political ideology

but that's mostly down to not being represented by an established party
