because it's pretty much a meme when you hear the criteria

Man, I can't find the good info-graphics anymore, now Google is just flooded with images from the million news articles pumped out

the definition of assault weapon includes revolvers

So, to be an assault weapon, the gun must have 2 of the following (two different categories)

Detachable magazine
Folding stock
Pistol grip (that front/side grip you might see)
Bayonet mount
Threaded barrel (means you can easily add a silencer)
Grenade launcher
Barrel shroud (a cool skin for the gun barrel)

yes, so a decorated barrel, is worth the same as a grenade launcher

(think secondary fire mode in a video game, where you launch a grenade)

okay but who other than actual criminals can just get a grenade launcher for a gun

pretty much, all guns have detachable magazines (other than most revolvers)

But people will quite literally dip this in plaster, and make it solid, or just use as is and shoulder it

the bayonet part is also just silly, same with grenade launcher

just tape a knife to the gun if you want a bayonet

(it's called a bayonet lug, and it's main use is that if the bayonet snaps, it helps guide the blade away from the user)

but, it may make your gun way harder to get

Same reason people (myself included) are pissed about all the silencer laws, they actually make the gun less deadly

The second grip, is in my mind the same way, I'm more likely to grip something hot and burn my hand, without a good grip

what's the reasoning behind restricting Grips/stocks

two reasons, it makes almost all guns (unless you're careful) assult weapons

which means you pay a higher tax

other reason is political, so when people rail against assault rifles, it puts a ~95% of guns under threat

The tax is the big one though

you want your gun to be more dangerous to the target

silencers are the only thing that ever is a sticking point for some people

because they think quieter gun == more crime

I can see the argument, but I don't really agree

less guns = more crime

they slow down the bullet enough (usually) so they don't go supersonic and make that load crack you'd otherwise hear

but guns are still fairly loud even with them
