Most sequels have the main meat as something entirely new, or changed
smash, is not that different
that is just not true of any series that releases games semi regularly
Pika, I don't know what sequels you play, but if the entire game is the same assets, and everything ported over with a new mode
than you're getting ripped off
most games do not completely innovate between games.
You're right
but there's a large difference in the big meat, there's much more new content, new creations, a new game
They created 16 new characters, a few new maps, added a story mode.
Some stickers too
Tweaking major game mechanics in a fighting game is a substantial change
Is mario kart 8 deluxe a new game
No, and they did not change any of the mechanics in MK8D
that is actually a port
I agree with that
Mario kart 8 deluxe added a new mode though, new characters, new maps, changed some of the physics, made it prettier
wow, sounds like something else huh
Every character I played in smash ultimate felt different than smash 4
They did change mechanics in deluxe pika
how much
they added double items is all I know
Apparently they changed how drifting worked a bit, I've heard it handles a bit differently too, and fire hopping was removed
see, the problem with this argument is the thin line between sequels ports and 'enhanced ports'
Nintendo makes TONS of these
Ultimate falls under the same roof
Yes, I agree they do, and I disagree that ultimate is fundamentally the same game as smash 4
MK8D is fundamentally the same game as MK8 as far as I am aware
This entire thing comes down to the scale for which either of us require for something to be considered not the exact same as a previous game
I think ultimate hits that, you do not.
MK8D: New characters, new mode, mechanic changes, new assets, reused assets, SAME GAME, ported code
Smash Ultimate: New characters, new mode, mechanic changes, new assets, reused assets, SAME GAME, ported code
Wow!
doesnt that make 4 a port of brawl though?
The big part of it for me, is the fact its reusing most of the same game from 4
I don't know enough about the brawl and 4 thing
by that standard, ultimate is just a super enhanced port of smash 64
Not at all
its not reusing the code, assets
or anything
Its not that its reusing characters
its that its REUSING CODE
and ASSETS
its the fact that they control c control Ved the game
and then started to tweak it
keeping it the same thing and not adding too much
MK8 deluxe is like this
so is super mario galaxy 2 a port of 1
that shitty poken game is like this
because they reused a fuck ton
umbreon
enhanced port
come on
i hit 2k characters
save the first part
yes yes
i know
one second
you realize this is going to end in a no u
Kappa
sure
Skyrim is just an enhanced port of oblivion Kappa
that is unironically true Bethesda only makes the same game
new bethesda*
elder scrolls 6 is just skyrim 2
No, because the main part of the game is different. The difference here is that the main focus of the game is the story/maps. Those changed, including new powerups and etc. It's a new game, it has a new story (main focus) and new everything. Sure it reused assets and physics, but its a SEQUEL. Smash is different, it reuses, but it doesn't add enough at all to differentiate itself. With the main focus of smash being the fighting, tweaking some numbers does not make it a different game. It also gets blurry at this point though because Smash isn't a "linear" or very intuitive game. See, with nintendo making many of these "enhanced ports", you have to think about the ACTUAL PROCESS of how this is done, rather than what you think. They take the game, the old game from the old system, copy and paste it. Then, they change a few numbers here and there, and make some new content, then once that's done, ship it out. When you compare this to super mario galaxy 1/2 there's a very clear line. They might of reused some similar things, but they innovated, unless you call putting a fucking bar on a robot innovation to the same degree as super mario galaxy 2, then.... Anyways, there's a clear difference in the changes between these two games. Smash "added" to the fighting yes, but how is that any different than mario kart 8 removing a feature and adding some in? It's not. For a game to be a sequel, it needs to define itself as such, it needs to clearly show that it innovated- not even that, it needs to be new. Smash ultimate is a good game, but it DOES NOT, do that. It's the same game, with the same code, 58 reused characters with small tweaks in them, reused maps and """new maps""". Smash ultimate is not a sequel, it's an enhanced port. It may add tweaks, a miniature smash bar, a new mode and etc. but that's no different than mario kart 8 deluxe.
While there are many different "terms" people use to describe rehashing and selling a game, like remake, remaster, port, enhanced port and etc. Smash most closely follows under an enhanced port. It does not keep the main game formula in tact, it is not a full remake of the game, its not a full porting of the game, but it's not a sequel because it does not innovate enough, it's not setting itself apart from its predecessor enough, too much of the main formula was reused. Something that maybe you could compare an enhanced port to is Fire Emblem 3, the first game was remade onto this sequel. You may even be able to call the first part, an "enhanced port" while reffering to the second (the new content) as a sequel.
There are enhancments in smash ultimate, it tries to set itself apart, it does slightly innovate, but it doesn't do enough. In comparison to other games, in comparison to what a sequel should be, in comparison to other nintendo enhanced ports, it falls under that title.
XD
yes it is just skyrim 2
Anyways, this mostly falls under semantics at the point I get to at the end.
Yes, as I said
we define things differently
I simply disagree that it does not do enough
One of my main points is though, you have to compare it to other examples.
everybody wins, we realize this is a subjective point
