Yes, it was in person; he spent the better part of a 3 hour session rolling several d12s to try to see if there was one that rolled exceptionally well or exceptionally poorly, since he had d12 hit dice and he'd be min-maxing and power gaming to the point where he'd be able to have I think 4 attacks per round at level..
