That part of it is mostly over, some of us still play the modern games sometimes, a few give a shit about comp, we are doing that one trading card game pocket in gacha chat from time to time. It's mostly become a clique though.

But yeah, while it is very arbitrary and chokes out some real games, the new and trending at least mostly only shows real games and obviously boosted porn games (but if you are buying those it is exactly what it says on the tin)

I am certain that most publishers now on steam just by the developer enough copies for all the steam algorithm checkmarks, and then puts the dev in a situation where the game will have to make X back before the devs will be paid

I'll answer this personally, and not as a Dev for this part, but I think steam takes a laissez-faire approach unless it touches on a big societal no no, (outright racism seems fine, but encouraging or inciting for genocide would be a no likely) or stuff involving minors or lack of
