I hate docker so much it's insane
my biannual need to use it for something has turned into half a day of wanting to slit my wrists
I literally don't understand why anyone uses it for anything, and I'm so happy that it's dying like you wouldn't beleive
that was the pitch, when docker itself cannot handle inter-container conflicts, it ceases to be useful though
containers as a concept are only as good as their host, and docker has genuinely never been good at that most basic thing
as far as deployment, they've also re-defined their standards so many times and keep waffling on how to deal with persistance
so there are no conventions, and this leads to everything you do via docker conflicting with something else
which is why docker is nearly dead at this point
legacy LXC, K8, and proprietary container formats killed it
but it's been dying a slow, slow death, and there are still retards who force you to use it
and they all derserve to be shot into the sun
I really was so all-in on "containers are the future" from when I first got into servers and computer architecture
and I've so completely 180'd on that at this point
The linux wars going on rn are funny, I think you, Polu, and Mint are probably the only other people here seeing it
unironic Hitler particles in 2025
I have seen some linux drama here and there
but I usually tune it out because linux is just the tryhard os
Replying to Spooky Phijkchu #spooky.131 I hate docker so much it's insane
I swear Docker has spys in every company to make people use it and to find ways to make it as horrible to use as possible.
their name is too good
I'm convinced that's their only staying power at this point
docker has been hardcore dying for a few years now, but it still manages to slip through because a bunch of boomers first learned about containers from Docker reps and associated containers == docker in 2015 or whenever
and the tech debt from using docker once for any part of a project, makes it a nightmare to claw back
every time I touch docker, I have this wonderful thought that this might be the last time I ever have to do this
docker very specifically
I'll save the autistic rant on podman, it's *fine*
other than a cool internal one in 2018 I saw (that we depreciated) RancherOS was my favorite management layer for containers
(also now depreciated)
K8s is far less of a headache
because of how they deal with shared resources
and they have never compromised on their standards/format
but because of that, a lot of software mantainers get pissy about integrating with them, and drop native support in-favor of their own proprietary containers
Replying to Kribbles #kribbles1 Is it specifically docker or containers in general that you find frustrating? Do you like podman?

The prof for the class I am TAing assigning 7 questions and not using crowdmark (the handy system that lets me grade by question because you submit your work question by question) is killing me
Having to mark 7 questions sequentially, then go to the next student and mark 7 questions makes it so hard to get in a marking flow state
Almost half done after 4 hours of marking at least!
Damn, fancy. I just had to annotate PDFs
I have to do that for this lol
Half the time I didn't get an answer sheet
Replying to mint #wimint pika, random question. did tall have a fire drill yesterday?
I have not been on campus in weeks, so I have no idea. Do you know someone at Queens or something?
Replying to Sienna Wolven #siennawolven Half the time I didn't get an answer sheet
They are required to give us one as per our TA union contract
Nope
Replying to Sienna Wolven #siennawolven Damn, fancy. I just had to annotate PDFs
What did you do school for
Electrical engineering, we only got a graduate student union very recently and by the time I left they had yet to get their shit together
To many fucking engineers
god damn it
Lol
