and while I think it's possible, I think you only get ~1 of those a decade

Mmos feel like a tough sell these days unless you have a good ip or an experienced dev team to carry it I think the league of legends mmo will be pretty popular at first for that reason

But I don’t play them nearly enough so it could be I just don’t know how popular they can be

MMOs also just need a good community to work, but the people who play MMOs today are just inherently not good for making MMOs popular.

That’s the other thing too is these civ simulators are whitelisted so there’s at least somewhat of a barrier to entry against troublemakers (blatant griefers and non participants, people who do things like form bandit gangs and stuff aren’t included in that)

mmos were a product of the time, the internet and communites as a whole were rather tight knit and extremely interconnected. nowadays there's too many microcommunities and niches. There's "too much" content, so you won't get millions of people playing the same game

for long long periods of time

you will never have another wow or xiv just because that market is kind of impossible to target at this point

and the new generation has zero interest when their micro communites and niches hold up better to them

we had this argument while waiting in line last month but I've thought about it more, I don't even think I'm talking about an "MMO" really when I say that

My sister still plays on a skyblock server which is pretty massive though. Not as interactive as the old townie servers though.

i worked with one of the biggest, like maybe it was num 2 or 3? townie server at the time and it couldnt make money anymore due to mojang changes and they all died

and then when it tried to revive it peaked at like 60 players, had like 20 daily for a bit then like 2 then like zero.

i think not until there's a big enough fracture that somehow magically seperates normies to another half of the internet

is there any single community that if they broke off and formed a new internet, you'd have interest in switching (or at least cross-browsing)

The internet died precovid when everyone began to gather around 3-5 websites, covid only accelerated that and also allowed people the opportunity to shit up hobby communities

project 2025 will put us all in the autism camps where we have our own LAN and can live in peace
