mmos were a product of the time, the internet and communites as a whole were rather tight knit and extremely interconnected. nowadays there's too many microcommunities and niches. There's "too much" content, so you won't get millions of people playing the same game

The internet died precovid when everyone began to gather around 3-5 websites, covid only accelerated that and also allowed people the opportunity to shit up hobby communities

LoL is the peak of over moderation not having an effect on the community. I think it actively is what adds to it getting worse

Botting, Datamining, lack of community interacting with each other. These are issues that need to be solved for any hope of MMO resurgence.
