From what he said on blogs, there's a few facets of it.

First off, the level editor was almost entirely for show, not functional.

The games art assets were dumped and redone at least twice, and the entire code was dumped and re-started three times I believe.

All that work and the most tangible output was the "my kickstarter has failed" video

At first it was being done almost purely in Flash, as the sidescrolling jumping thing, then there was the beat-em-up version where you could move sideways and vertically, then there was talk of scrapping all the code from Flash to make it in Unity

there were a couple proofs of concept and tech demos of it in Unity

But I have a feeling that of what was done on it - and this is just conjecture on my part - was just a massive amount of proofs of concept and tech demos, rather than an actually playable game.

I'll be honest I know very little about game development and I'd be lying if I said I followed the game closely, but it just seems like such a huge waste

Going off of the "My kickstarter has failed" video, if he had given up when Krysta left him and left him without someone doing like 40%+ of the work, I wouldn't be surprised if he had just released what assets he had for people to do what they want with it

It's not like there wouldn't be at least a handful of dedicated people wanting to make mods for the game

People can do crazy shit if they're dedicated enough

I played a mod for an old hockey game from 2004 that had updated rosters and the announcers would almost perfectly say the names of players that would have been like 6 years old when that game came out

People have done shit with DvZ way in the past(I don't know if any of it can be salvaged if even found, but I remember people modding DvZ back inthe day), people have made their own shit for URealms Live, so I don't see why not

I did a LOT of dialogue with homebrew NPCs and side quests for it because while Ruby is an extremely easy coding language, I had ZERO idea how to effectively balance the power curve.

So I made so many friggin sidequests not just to put in something entertaining, but to give an excuse for why you would have to go up 10 levels to be able to defeat the ogre from episode 6.

Unless you just grinded the shit out of random encounters.

Balance is probably the hardest part of any game

Like you gotta keep people engaged but not frustrate them into never playing again

If I were to try to run it as a tabletop RPG, it'd be really easy because I can adjust everything on the fly, but in a video game, where the numbers are pre-determined, I had ZERO clue how to make it flow well without requiring the player to grind like crazy or do a bunch of comedic side quests, with mixed results in the humor.

Then again, you can run AD&D 1e or 2e tabletop and have a paladin solo the Nine Hells, slay Asmodeus and marry his daughter by 5th level.

I suppose that's why you need other people to do game testing

Another issue was that I started making it before S1 of the Escapist version was even finished, so while the goal was still to get the herb to cure Schmoopy's dying grandmother, I had absolutely no idea how to get to that point.

The "main story" part I got up to was encountering Roamin & Gaary, which I was going to have be a full-fledged fight, then upon winning and entering the Mountains of Norrington, basically mix the Escapist version and the Newgrounds version and figure something out from there.
