Not to mention that it's a lot easier to lose a license from prescribing more of something than you're supposed to than being negligent, especially in the case of psychiatry, where doctors/nurse practitioners will sometimes discharge a patient from their "care" if the patient is difficult to avoid any potential liability if the patient commits an act of violence or suicide while under that doctor's care.

The doctor/NP can be held liable to an extent because they can't involuntarily commit a patient they don't find to be an immediate threat to themselves or others - a psych ward will often do a quick evaluation and just turn away the patient if they don't find it to be serious enough to commit - but if the patient does end up being dangerous, the current overseeing doctor/NP can be held liable, sued, lose license, etc.
