More black people in prison in the US today than there were slaves in 1850. Sounds about right, seeing as there are 1.8 million people total in prison in the US as of 2021, with the country's population being being 334 million, while the US population in 1750 was 23.2 million.
EDIT: The statement is fucking wrong, anyway. Quick census check shows 3.2 million black slaves in the US in 1850, almost double the population of all prisoners in the US in 2021. If we're accounting for probation and parole for correctional control, rather than just prison, the number goes up to 6.3 million, with about 1.7 million being black.
