It's not as retarded as it appears. When you have a very new channel(I think it lasts for a month after creation), if you're live streaming and there are 300 people viewing, that appears for new people trying to view it, so they have to hit "Subscribe" on the channel to see it. EDIT: The limit is on channels with more than 50 but less than 1000 subs, and it's only when the channel is live-streaming and only appears for people streaming on mobile devices. You previously needed more subs to even be able to stream on mobile.

It's an anti-bot measure. It's really rudimentary, but it's far from the most retarded thing I've seen.

Maybe Youtube is trying to avoid channels where people are doing shit like "uncapped subathons" where they go to sleep, put up an avatar with a sleep mask on, and play videos of people making bread dough for 10 hours while they sleep and have hundreds of bot accounts viewing the stream to try to get it to be more visible. Or at least that would be the ideal.
