the cost to make it official is because changing your documentation takes a lot of effort
It's not even expensive or a lot of effort on the part of the person changing their name; you go to the courthouse, fill out a little paperwork, have it in a minor newspaper for like 4 or 6 weeks that your legal name is changing(in case you're trying to change it for fraudulent reasons), and then it's like $200-250 to get all the shit processed.

Everyone I met in WoW during Legion still calls me "Scream" because my mains were "Screamshine," a ret paladin, then "Shougeki," an elemental shaman, but people couldn't pronounce it or read it as "Shokugeki" (like Food Wars), so I changed it to "Screamshock".

That's called a delusion of grandeur, commonly found in patients suffering from bipolar disorder, schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder, some substance abusers(depends on the substance), antisocial personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, among others.

My facial hair doesn't cause me dysphoria, but my balding does.
