Replying to sudo TPK #sylfar If we're talking from what the job of a police officer is to do, it's to uphold the laws written by legislators. One cannot reasonably "prevent" crimes wholly; legislators can limit the potential for crimes to occur by passing laws, which police officers can enforce by arresting those actively planning or attempting to commit a crime, but you cannot completely prevent a crime without going into Minority Report territory.

Nah, instead of focusing on a systemic solution that, could, you know, solve a crime at the root. initiatives to you know, stop wage theft, provide an acceptable standard of living to everyone, there is more then enough money in this nation to do that. we militarize our police, they are no longer someone you go to when your car gets broken into and you like want to investigate it. no, they are better off running around trying to prevent crime by shooting at it before it happens. no solutions, only violence, cops through tear gas humans and call it violence only after ya kick it back to them.

That's the job of legislators, not police officers. Officers are tools for upholding existing laws, not creating laws themselves.
I was trying to say, the laws have to be made by legislators, and the police are supposed to enforce them, but that you cannot stop crime wholly; to do this, you would have to monitor every single person 24/7, or arrest people before there's even reasonable doubt that a crime is being planned, let alone committed. The only way to have people not breaking laws, is to have no laws, because there will always be people that will do things, or at least attempt to do things, that are breaking one law or another.
I never said anything about any police force or any government, I stated what the purpose for them existing is meant to be. What they do or don't do in practice is a completely different story, one that I'm not interested in getting into because I prefer to avoid political discourse for the most part, because even when agreeing with someone, it gets extremely fucking vitriolic most of the time.
I'm not even attempting to argue with anyone, just saying that it's literally impossible to stop crime unless there are no laws to break, therefore crime cannot exist, as a crime is defined as "an act or omission that constitutes an offense that may be prosecuted by the state and is punishable by law."
