...That's what being a DM, GM, referee, whatever you want to call it, the storyteller in an RPG is. You make a story that's engaging and fun for the people playing. If they don't like it, they either leave and you have to find new people, try to play their way and try to break your game and no one has fun, or you change it in a way that the players you have are having fun, but you're also having fun still. He essentially was telling a story in a way people liked, then dropped the campaign halfway through to start a new one that he liked, disregarding what anyone else would like; some people left, some people stayed, some new people came, repeat ad nauseum, to the point that there's barely anyone left, and NO ONE new coming in. If you grow to hate doing what you're doing when storytelling, but everyone else likes it, you shift it a little bit at a time in a direction you want, not end the journey to face Asmodeus in the Ninth Hell when the party just finishes the Fourth Hell.
