people always say that trans people have always existed, but there is definitely something different now
If we look in a historical sense, there are definitely examples of people living as the opposite gender, though the level of what we see today is unprecedented.

Another part of the issue is that if we're looking in a historical sense, a lot of this simply isn't documented, then becomes conflated in second-hand writings about something/someone, e.g. Ranmaru Mori is widely believed to have had a sexual relationship with Oda Nobunaga, but in 16th century Japan, they didn't exactly keep records of men living actually as women, but Ranmaru is still often portrayed as trans these days.

This is why I don't accept myself as a part of a "community." Gotta love when the "autistic community" claim so many historical figures as autistic, tens, hundreds, thousands of years before the diagnosis, with the only "autistic" traits being "genius and socially awkward".
