one of the guys I actually like uploaded today and I was excited, until it turned out to just be an ad for an (overpriced) book he contributed to writing
yeah
I'll give him credit, it takes some balls to publish your video essays in written form as a bound $60-$100 book
that one's ok, I'm a history nerd and he got it mostly correct which was cool
but it's the letdown of "dangit, I already know most of this niche topic"

they all seem to aim for that pricepoint that's hard to justify, just to own cool thing you'll put on a table

for me its always "cool video essay youtuber pretty much only streams now because they makes 10x more money for 1/10th the effort" cough cough joseph anderson

I have a lot of JA lore too, I feel like we've talked about this before though
I'll give him credit on one thing
he actually did become a much better streamer
when he got into it, he was like every other old guy who tried to get in on it
slow, easily distracted, and a bad entertainer
but as much as I'm not going to watch his streams, he did become watchable
No anyway, my favorite lore is during the Spooky villain arc
I leaked his Mario Odyssey video
since that was back when JA was huge on /v/
and he was becoming more and more antagonistic towards everyone in his threads

there are a few others out there, but the focus is on game design and history than critiquing/revieiwing
Shammy caught the YouTuber head-up-ass disease, Super Bunnyhop fell victim to an Indian scam and is trying to sue his city now, Raycevick became old and fell off, Mandalore isn't a traditional game essay channel
those are the most similar ones who spring to mind
and Mandalore is currently dying too

there are plenty of good channels I like, but didn't see fit to include
i also think alot of education and engineering youtube fell off. Kurzgesagt lost most of its charm. mark rober is now discount Mr. beast. Tom Scott is enjoying retirement, and veritasium... i dont really trust anymore. he has a few incredible videos but sometimes is far too confident posting somewhat iffy science.
on the engineering side, Real engineering feels too much like ads for random companies, William ozman is acitve on his second channel fucking around on a farm, idk what Nile Red is doing, and i think michael reeves is now 90 percent streamer
