Well yeah, it is different because women do it either socially or because they genuinely have dysphoria. Men do it because of a sexual paraphenelia (most often) and very very rarely dysphoria (minority of cases)

Im not that well versed in modern rob but from what I can gather they are platonic to the knowledge of viewers. That being said they have the type of platonic relationship to the world that nobody would bat an eye if they came out as a couple.
